Saving your Rainwater for a dry day
Rain water tanks come in many shapes and sizes, above ground and underground tanks. The question is which tank suits your home. Earth & Water can provide valuable information as to how much water you can harvest from your roof and how much water you will use through the season. Once you have worked out how much water you can save and your consumption then you can make an informed decision as to what sized tank would suit your home.
Rain water is harvested off your roof, along your gutters and down the down pipes into the rain water tank via a sieve in the tp of the tank or through a “first flush divertor” to separate the leaves and other particles. Once the clean water is available then this is the water that is stored and pumped out to your home.
The most popular use is for the cold water feed into the washing machine and to flush your toilets. If both items are connected to the rain water system you qualify for a Water Corporation rebate of up to $ 600.
Some homes connect the whole home and use a fine cartridge filter to make the water safe for drinking. This makes the most use of rain water, but you must check that the water is safe for drinking. Where you need a reliable supply of water without having to manually switch over valves outside we recommend an automatic water switch is connected to both the rain water system and to your scheme water supply to cross over from rain water when the tank is dry. This also protects the pump from running dry.
You can save up to 120,000 litres of water year off a 200sqm roof !
