Cottesloe Irrigation – Spring Service

Oct 9, 2020

Location

This beautiful home in Cottesloe was constructed in 2016 by Humphrey Homes and  Earth & Water installed the irrigation. It is low maintenance system that reliably delivers water to four individual watering zones.

Each year as winter ends we complete a routine service to repair broken drip lines, replace clogged sprinklers and most importantly reset the watering zones in preparation for summer.

Each key item of the Spring Service is outlined below.

Cottesloe subsurface drip irrigation repair

Repairing Reticulation

It is not uncommon for a shovel to be put through subsurface driplines and sprinklers. In this case, the owner found the leak and promptly duct taped it shut.

Our irrigation technician quickly repaired the break with the correct fitting.

On most reticulation systems we include a pressure gauge that monitors water pressure throughout the irrigation system and tells us immediately if there is a leak or blockage.

The Tech Filter

A special filter stops roots from invading drip lines and sprinklers by releasing small amounts of Trifluralin, a root deterrent herbicide. We replace this filter every two years but rinse it annually.

This home uses scheme water to irrigate and there is little to clean each year. Homes that run using bore water tend to need an acid rinse or heavier clean due to the accumulation of minerals like iron and calcium.

The problem of root invastion is big issue on older systems but with new drip lines it is not. We use Netafim ASXR Drip line because it has a copper lining that becomes an extra deterrant to roots.

Water Management

Each year in September Perth’s watering ban lifts and we visit this home to change each watering zones settings to maximise their chance to thrive in Spring. There are four zones:

  1. Front verge lawn
  2. Veggie beds
  3. Terrace
  4. Rear Courtyard

Each zone has different plants and evaporation rates depending on how much sun they recieve. We program the frequency and duration of the watering in each of zones according these factors as well as how much water the plants need.
