Joondalup Primary – Update on Iron Stain Removal

Oct 27, 2020

Update Summary

The goal from the start was always to reduce the visual impact of iron staining on the school. We worked closely with the school to create a timeline that worked around school holidays and each stage of the project.

The first stage was installing a bore water treatment system specifically designed to separate and capture iron before it can enter the school’s irrigation system.

It is always important to install the iron removal bore water treatment before doing stain removal because the stain will quickly return.

Most recently we completed the first stage of iron stain removal on several structures that were deeply stained with iron.

Buildings

The most prominent staining was removed first.

All building walls that faced the sports ovals where the sprinklers are, were stained the worst. The walls are light brick and very porous, which means they are easily stained.

In teams of two we applied our acid based iron stain solution to the effected areas. Iron when it is oxidised is brown and orange – the typical stain many are familiar with.

However when it mixes with stain removal solution it changes to a light yellow and this is how we know it is working.

Playground Equipment

Playground equipment had light iron staining from overspray but the material was not porous and it was simple to remove.

Safety and mitigation of harm is at the forefront of every single iron stain removal job. Our teams are briefed on the Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) on how to apply and manage the acid-based stain removal solution.

We protect our teams by supplying the right safety equipment such as gloves, glasses and respiratory masks. Our safety policy extends to the public as our team are taught how to neutralise the solution so it is not harmful.

Roofing

In areas of high wind and large sprinkler arcs, roofing is always a hot spot for iron staining.

This is the next stage in the plan and will likely be completed in the next school holidays.

The buildings look fresh and new and with the roofs finally done the school will be reinvigorated. This highly visible stain will be removed permenantly as the bore water treatment system stops any future iron from accumulating.
