Mt Lawley Lawn Health

A suburb prone to iron staining

This classic Mt Lawley home irrigates its garden beds and lawns with bore water. In 2008 Earth & Water installed subsurface irrigation and a small bore water treatment system. Although the groundwater has particularly high concentrations of iron and calcium, there has been no visible stain because the subsurface drip prevents water from ever settling on surfaces like walls and paving.

Each year in Spring, we complete a spring service which includes:

  • Disc filter cleaning/replacement
  • Acid rinsing irrigation & filter
  • Lawn health check
  • Inspection of drippers and sprinklers
Tech Filters with iron clogging

Filter Cleaning

Iron is brought up via the bore and captured in a small disc filtration unit. The 400 micron mesh disks catch the iron and it accumulates there instead of over garden areas.

This filter is checked twice a year because it recieves a greater volume of iron than most systems. During this check up, the filter is either rinsed or replaced.

The orange filter pictured was replaced with the new blue filter cartridge. It is a classic example of how iron and calcium can clog a filter and reduce its efficiency.

Acid Rinse

Subsurface drippers and sprinkler heads will clog with iron and calcium when the filtration unit becomes saturated with minerals like in the image above where it is orange.

This is the process of an acid rinse:

  1. Cut open irrigation and confirm blockages
  2. Flush irrigation lines out with normal bore water.
  3. Introduce acid at bore head and reduce pH levels to approximately 2.
  4. Fill irrigation lines with the acid rinse (low pH water).
  5. Leave over night
  6. Return and flush out acid rinse.

This process breaks down mineral accumulation in irrigation drippers and sprinkler heads so they can function properly in the heat of summer.

Lawn Health

The lawn of this Mt Lawley home was inconsistent and unhealthy because it was wasn’t receiving the right nutrients and too much water over winter.

We changed the soil composition to increase the nutrient uptake of the lawn using this approach:

  1. Dry mix fertilisers and lawn conditioners were spread over the lawn to correct acidity (pH) levels.
  2.  Wet mix fertilisers applying with a hand held sprayer.

Watering Times

Each year once Perth’s Watering Ban is lifted, we reprogram their watering schedule.

Across the home there are six irrigation zones that run on their own settings. By segmenting the property up we are able to maximise water efficiency and tailor watering to the needs of the plants in each zone.

We always recommend using a Wifi enabled water controller for real-time reporting and remote access.

Iron Removal & Prevention

Iron, calcium, manganese and salt are Perth’s biggest bore water contaminants. We work with bore drillers to improve wate quality across the Swan Coastal Plain and the Darling Scarp.
