Grey Water

The Process

Grey water is household water that is captured and reused on the same property.

This system reuses your shower, laundry and wash basin water to irrigate your garden and lawn. By running a separate drain pipe from your toilet and kitchen to sewer, your greywater is directed to a pump and filter system. The pump pressurises the irrigation system which is how the water is effectively spread distributed through your garden and lawn.

Grey water excludes water captured from toilets and kitchens, which is classified as black water or waste water. Black water is unsafe to reuse in homes given its toxic nature and the highly concentrated organic matter present.

Legislation set by the Department of Health determines how your grey water can be used. If you just want water for sub-surface irrigation then the treatment system will be less sophisticated. If you want to reuse greywater in the house in washing machines and flushing toilets, then your grey water treatment will have extra treatment steps to meet tighter requirements.

Grey water systems have a self-rinsing process that reduces the need to clean filters, which means less services for you.

Dispersion and Usage

Recycled grey water has varying levels of treatment based on how the water is intended to be used:

  • Residential gardens and lawns
  • Inside the home: toilets & laundry

Outdoor areas irrigated by subsurface driplines can use grey water. This is the most suitable method of recycling grey water in a residential setting. The grey water treatment process is simple and unsophisticated.

With minimal filteration and sterilisation, grey water sediment and large particles are removed. This is important because it:

  • stops dripline clogging with particles
  • stops smelly water from flowing through to gardens
  • dripline efficiently delivers water directly to plant root systems
Inside the home: toilets & laundry

Grey water can only legally be used again inside homes for flushing toilets, washing machines and laundry basins.

This requires a greater level of water treatment beyond simple filtration. Ultraviolet light and chlorination are sophisticated grey water treatment processes that remove bacteria and pathogens which are harmful and unsafe for human touch.

UV light treatment is suitable for residential greywater systems as the recycled grey water is instantly safe for use.

For commercial treatment where the recycled water is being stored for longer periods of time then chlorination is the most suitable grey water treatment system.

Maintenance
Over time sediment accumulates in the filters and has to be removed.

This is a very simply process of removing the lide from the grey water filter box, taking the filters out and hosing them down.

For most homes maintenance needs to be done once a year. Because the filters can visibly be seen it is easy to know when to remove and clean them before they become to clogged and start to smell.
