The pressure gauges were installed as a way for Bronwen & Graham to see when there’s a high pressure differential before and after the filters. Abnormally high pressures indicate that the filters need rinsing or replacing because they have collected a lot of iron.
Untreated Bore water filtration in Mt lawley

Hi Earth & Water,

We have an issue with our retic system.

The pressure gauges are reading high when it’s running.  The left filter is very dirty and a simple tap rinse is not solving the problem.

Can you please come and inspect our retic?

Mt Lawley

This was an email received from one of our long term clients in Mt Lawley.
We received it on a Tuesday and were there Wednesday.
This is very common call out we get to suburbs where untreated bore water is used to irrigate peoples gardens.

Summary

We installed this irrigation and filtration system in 2008 and return annually to service it.

The pressure gauges were installed as a way for Bronwen & Graham to see when there’s a high pressure differential before and after the filters.

Abnormally high pressures indicate that the filters need rinsing or replacing because they have collected a lot of iron.

Filter Inspection

The first thing our skilled irrigation technician did was inspect the two filters.

One is a residential 80 micron Arkal Disc Filter that is designed to capture and hold solids and organic matter.

The other is a Netafim short 25mm Tech Filter that slowly releases Trifluralin as a root intrustion deterrant. It is an essential addition for older models of subsurface drip irrigation where copper oxide isn’t embedded into the dripline.

Iron Accumulation

Iron is one of the most prevalent and damaging minerals in Perth’s groundwater.

Mt Lawley has iron a big iron problem where we have seen it reach 15 milligrams per litre (mg/l).

To put this in context, it starts becoming a problem at 2.5 mg/l when it starts staining property.

For our clients in Mt Lawley, Bronwen and Graham, they only use their untreated bore water for subsurface drip irrigation and there is no risk of iron staining.

However iron will clog the irrigations drippers over time. To mitigate this, we installed the disc filter which is rinsed and replaced very easily and cheaply compared to replacing a whole garden of clogged subsurface irrigation.

sssIron Bore Water Treatment Systems

This is a classic system that we regularly install in suburbs that are at risk of damage from minerals in their untreated bore water.

Whilst this is a simply, effective and cheap system for dealing with iron, it is only effective because it matches the home owners end use water habits.

For larger property’s that use sprinklers or have iron staining problems, Earth & Water has sophisticated filtration systems that separate and capture iron before it can ever enter the irrigation system.

This same principles of water treatment apply to all projects from residential homes to sports ovals, schools and commercial businesses.

See examples on our Portfolio page.
